Kati Ann Powell
Paralegal
Kati was born in Tennessee and grew up all over the world as a military brat, which she attributes to her ability to make friends within minutes. Her dream as a kid was to become an Attorney. She did not take the normal path in life to get to where she is, she first spent over 10 years as a stay-at-home mom to her 3 boys. After going through what she refers to as a “loving divorce,” she found herself called to help others. She began a career in public safety as a 911 Dispatcher, and then attended Weber State University to become a Law Enforcement Officer. After working at a police department, she decided to make the jump to the legal field, and returned to Weber State University for Paralegal Studies. She wants to be able to help more people navigate life through a divorce and co-parenting. She is passionate about changing the negative stigma surrounding divorce.
One of the most important things to Kati as she has worked with people during the lowest points of their lives, is to make people feel heard, valued, and respected. She understands how scary divorce can be, and focuses on helping people not feel alone. Kati especially wants to help parents who are having custody issues to navigate necessary interactions with law enforcement for the better.
Kati happily shares 50/50 custody of her 3 sons and relishes those times as a mother. When she does not have her kids, she loves a good karaoke night with friends, traveling, gardening, photography, or learning about whatever her current hyper fixation hobby is. She is an avid indoorsy person, and despite living in Utah she prefers to stay as far away from nature as possible.

Derek Shumway
Executive Assistant
Derek was born in China and adopted to Utah at a young age. Having a family made of both biological and adopted siblings, he can attest that families come in all shapes and sizes for the good.
A bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in international strategy and diplomacy, from Brigham Young University, led Derek to become a journalist and news reporter in Washington, D.C. He then worked in the United States Senate for Utah Senators Willard Mitt Romney and Michael Shumway Lee, as an immigration constituent liaison.
Understanding the immigration system and liaising with federal agencies are strong skills of Derek. He has worked with various government agencies involved in immigration including the Department of State, USCIS, DHS, ICE, and U.S. Embassies and Consulates.
Immigration is complicated, and Derek learned its processes with expert communication and intense empathy. Saving families and individuals during major crises such as the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, COVID-19 border closures, and the U.S. Southern Border with Mexico reiterated to him that family matters—and safety comes first.
Earning a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has taught Derek there is always room for hope and improvement. With a passion for entrepreneurship, he started several companies during his college years. Though each company eventually wound down, he is proud to call these successful failures and great learning moments.
Playing the piano and organ, speaking French, and being with family and friends are some of Derek’s favorite things to do. He enjoys being active in local politics and government and was elected to serve as the vice chair and a state and county delegate for his district in the Utah GOP Party.
